Recession - A regression or a progression?

Sis. Shekinah Franklyn

Burdened by desperate financial times, worries of losing jobs by techies have increased by 50% in the past few months. A huge chunk of people have mortgage arrears and have fallen behind with repayment on loans secured against their property. Recession - Isn’t that the most used word in the world today? Even the professionals are depressed about the financial crunch. Many of them find it difficult to share their financial problem with their family members and friends. The number of people struggling with debts has soared during the past year following the financial crisis. Does the Bible talk about recession? Revelation. 6:6 ….and I heard a voice ...., “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and the wine.” A denarius was equivalent to a day’s wages. Increase in the price of wheat or barley means inflation or hike in prices/cost of living. Don’t you think it is happening these days?

The question to every believer today – is there progression in time of recession? Let me encourage you that at the end of the same verse there is a promise “do not harm the oil and the wine.” Be filled with the Holy Spirit; do not allow anything whatsoever to hijack you from the Lord. When we make conscious efforts to remain filled with the Holy Spirit and walk in His ways, recession will not affect us. Cannot believe? Then check this out.

During our CHAG care cell prayer meeting we prayed that the members of the care cells should not become victims of recession, rather they all should have a financial increase. As we were praying in the house, same time the Lord did a miracle at Br. Frank’s office, a member of our cell. He received a letter saying he got a salary hike. Not only this the same week another member, Br. Allen Ruben got a promotion in his job. If this is not a miracle then what else is? In spite of recession, there is progression for the Lord’s people.

Things to remember during recession:

1. Cling onto God’s promises.

His promises are yes and amen (2 Corinthians. 1:20). God supplies all our needs (Philippians. 4:19). Wealth of the wicked is for the righteous (Proverbs. 13:25). Let the poor say I am rich (2 Corinthians. 6:10). Confess the Word of God every day and believe in what you confess, then it will come to pass.

2. Give to the Lord.

In spite of lack God expects us to give to Him so that we will be blessed. The widow who gave her best (Luke. 21:3). The widow at Zarephath (1 Kings. 17:12). Give and it shall be given unto you (Luke. 6:33).

3. Spend wisely.

Spend your money and resources wisely. Ask God the wisdom to spend your money.

4. Work with your hands.

The Lord blesses the work of our hands (Deuteronomy. 28:8). The Bible says if we are lazy we will not possess riches.

Child of God now is the time, do not let fear rule your life. If we believe in God he can bless us in spite of recession in this world. The choice is ours – regression or progression in this time of recession.
